Stochastic printing vs. Conventional offset Printing

Stochastic printing vs. Conventional offset Printing

Computer-To-Plate technology utilizing a different technique for printing halftones known as Frequency Modulation (FM) screening, or stochastic printing. Conventional offset screening, or Amplitude Modulation is certainly better, especially when higher line screens of 175 to 200 are used in halftone and four color CMYK process printing.

The best way to define stochastic printing is to compare it to conventional offset printing.

In conventional offset printing, images are printed using grid-like screens that separate the image into evenly space dots that are larger in size in the darker areas and smaller in size in the light areas. In four color process printing, separate screens are used to reproduce each of the four colors, black, cyan, magenta and yellow.

In stochastic printing, images are printed by dots spread randomly throughout the image area. The dots are not equally spaced and aligned in a row or grid and they vary according to the tonal value to be reproduced. The lighter areas have few dots, the darker areas have more dots.

Printing with stochastic screening offers the advantages of less ink on the sheet, can reproduce too much detail; grain of image’s photographic film can become visible, imperfection in flesh tones are more visible, holding a small dot is a great challenge on press, very unforgiving on press, tighter controls have to be implemented, 20% more dot gain than conventional, proofing is difficult.

Conventional offset screens have the advantages of greater latitude of changing color density on press, more forgiving halftone reproduction, better printing of large amounts of ink on paper and better production of one and two color printing. Metallic or opaque ink halftones have larger impact and works better for skin tones.

Do you remember walking down the aisles of your music store and just skimming over the thousands and thousands of CDs? What made you suddenly stop and spontaneously pick up a CD? What’s the first thing that sparks your curiosity? Is it the content or the appeal? While most would argue, it should be about the music. It was the artwork that captured your attention. As much as we would love to believe it’s the inside that matters; lets face it, image is important. This is not, by all means, to discredit the music. The content is relevant in that; the music keeps the fans loyal and coming back for more. But if the customer just walked by your CD and never picks it up, the potential fan is gone.

Don’t underestimate the power of CD cover art! The design of your CD cover is a crucial factor that can separate the amateur from the professional. It has the power to capture new fans. CD cover design can mean the difference between having your press kit CDs ending up in the trashcans or in a CD players of A&R representatives. A captivated design can attract new business and enhance your image. Even in vinyl days, cover art has always been a major attraction.

CD design is vital, it provide a glimpse into your personality. It can tease and titillate the imagination. If you like what’s on the outside; wait until you turn me on. From country to rock and everything in between, CD cover art speaks volume about who you are. Don’t make the mistake of outsourcing the design work to amateur. Although, it might be cost effective to even design it yourself, this could cost you dearly in the end; your potential new businesses.

Graphic designers have the artistic expertise to creative eye-catching designs. You’ve taken you time to perfect your music, and your cover art is the first thing people see. Don’t chance it with an amateurish design. A professional graphic designer can give your CD cover the wow factor it needs to grab hold of your audience. CD cover art should attract customers’ attention, capture their interest and finally, sell your CD.

Remember: You only have one chance to make a first impression.

Get Your Voice Heard Through CD Duplication

Whether you're a musician in search of a recording label, a motivational speaker in search of an audience, or a company in search of customers, using CDs or DVDs is an extremely effective means of communicating your message. Marketing and advertising professionals understand the power of audio and video to leave a lasting impression, and frequently insert CDs or DVDs into mass mailings, magazine polybags, and press kits. They know something that those who are just making a name for themselves aren't aware of: CD duplication and DVD duplication isn't as expensive as it might seem.

Whether you're putting together your own press mailing, developing a demo CD to send to movers and shakers, wish to sell video of your performance, or want to showcase your products and services, you can add an extra touch of professionalism by working with a company that specializes in CD and DVD duplication. When it comes to cost, it works like other forms of printing: the higher the quantity, the lower the per-piece price.

For example, if you want to produce a CD in a printed cardboard sleeve, you could get 1,000 made for about a dollar a piece. Up the quantity to 10,000, and the price drops to around 56 cents a piece. This price typically includes replicated discs with full-color offset or silkscreen printing, a printed cardboard sleeve, insertion, and shrinkwrap.

Bulk quantities of CDs and DVDs are even less expensive. One thousand CDs run only about 45 cents each, while DVDs are priced as low as $650 per thousand, or 65 cents per DVD. As for packaging, a printed paper sleeve adds only about seven cents per CD or DVD, while a jewel case is about 20 cents per case.

DVD box packaging is also an option at around $1.20 per DVD for 1,000, and about 67 cents per piece for 10,000. This kind of replication and packaging typically includes printing, a full-color case wrap, assembly, and overwrap. A top spine label generally costs a few cents more.

If you're planning to do a mailing, you can use a CD duplication service that will duplicate your CD, then insert it into a cardboard mailer and shrinkwrap it. Pricing for the replicated discs and mailers runs about $1.60 each for 1,000, or about 50 cents each for 10,000.

If you want to go the extra step and take advantage of cutting-edge technology, the best DVD and CD duplication services have products like FlexDVD, which is a DVD that can bend without snapping or cracking. This is perfect for cover mounting and mass mailings. Another new and intriguing technology is called "Rub 'n Smell," whereby a scent is embedded into a varnish that covers the printed side of the disc and is activated when the recipient rubs the disc's label. Now, that's the sweet smell of success!

The bottom line, though, is that whether you're marketing yourself or your business, you can take advantage of the same techniques that huge marketing firms use – without breaking the bank.

Cutting Edge DVD Duplication

Thanks to the high demand by movie studios, television networks, video game designers, and software developers, the DVD Duplication industry is growing at an unprecedented pace. In addition, advertising departments and agencies are increasingly turning to DVD duplication and CD duplication to distribute product promotions, press kits, and collateral sales materials.

There are a number of technologies that have been developed in order to deliver information in a highly innovative and effective manner, and to minimize some of the problems that have arisen as a result of piracy.

One of the most imaginative advances in DVD manufacturing is what is known as a FlexDVD. This ultra-thin disc is only 0.6mm thick, and can be bent and manipulated without damage to the disc. Remarkably, the FlexDVD plays like a regular disc, and is available in DVD-5 (4.7 GB), HD-DVD (15 GB), 80mm VCD (1.1 GB), and a "mini" HD-DVD (3.7 GB). Yet, because it's only half as thick as a regular DVD, it can be utilized in ways that regular DVDs simply cannot. For example, because it's resistant to breaking, shattering, and cracking, a FlexDVD can easily be used in direct mail, or as a cover mount on a magazine or manual.

Another innovation in the DVD duplication field is what's called a "hybrid disc." This is a two-sided disc that contains DVD material on one side and digital audio on the other. It can be formatted as DVD/CD, HD-DVD/CD, or HD-DVD/DVD-5. While the music and video industries have used this product, it has expanded to the business-to-business sector. Within the music industry, one side of this hybrid disc is often used for music videos, behind the scenes footage, and artists' biographies, while the other side is used as a conventional CD. The B-to-B market appreciates that a single disc operates both as a DVD-ROM and CD-ROM, enabling them to reach every target audience with a single disc.

While the adage says that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, DVD duplication and CD duplication services are often judged by their packaging and labeling. One of the most intriguing – and scent-sational – innovations is what are termed "rub and smell discs." Essentially, a scented varnish is applied to the label but remains inert until someone rubs the label and releases the scent. Given research that indicates that consumers are four times as likely to buy a product that they can smell over a similar but unscented product, marketers are embracing the potential of rub and smell discs. Those in the dvd duplication industry are adding this technology to their repertoire by offering clients both stock and customized scents.

The industry is also offering cutting edge technology to prevent unauthorized DVD duplication and CD duplication. With an estimated one billion dollars per year lost to piracy in the movie industry alone, the urgency to find ways to protect copyrighted material has reached the critical stage. There are a number of techniques employed that prevent video content from being recorded to DVD and computer recorders, either digitally or through analog means.

Recent trends have clearly demonstrated that the DVD duplication industry is more than up to the task of finding new and innovative ways to manufacture DVDs, create creative packaging solutions, and prevent piracy.
